Functional Safety Engineer

Major Responsibilities:
  • Manage Safety Instrumented System lifecycle program, processes and administration in BTN
  • Work closely with production, IT and PCT asset engineers to optimize safety instrument system architecture on-site
  • Verify new or modified equipment as designed and managed in accordance with ISA 84 / IEC 61511 Safety Instrumented System requirements
  • Periodically support PHA/HAZOP/LOPA studies and ensure compliance with company guidelines and practices for SIS and non-SIS instrumented risk reduction layers of protection
  • Help preparing Safety Integrity Level calculations
  • Verify proof test completion compliance for safety instruments
  • Responsible for preparation and management of Safety Requirement Specifications documentation throughout the Safety Lifecycle
  • Support strategic and capital projects/audits that involve SIS components with system vendor, contractor personnel and project engineers as the company subject matter expert
  • Coordinate, review and validate design in compliance with Safety Requirement Specifications on-site
  • Support Safety Instrumented Systems validation, new installation and modifications, improvement activities
  • Troubleshoot and lead failure analysis on instrumented equipment and recommend corrective or preventative measures
  • Responsible to support FAT and SAT plans for Safety Instrumented Systems and lead commissioning testing efforts of safety-related systems
  • Interact and work directly with PCT reliability experts and asset engineers during investigations and implementation of improvements, standards and corrective actions of instrumentation and electrical- related incidents.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Chemical Engineering or related degree with 4+ years of applicable experience OR a Master’s degree in Electrical/Chemical Engineering or related degree with 2+ years of applicable experience OR a PhD degree in Electrical/Chemical Engineering or related degree with 1+ years of applicable experience.
  • 5+ years of experience managing safety in industrial or a manufacturing environment
  • Familiar with the Process Hazard Analysis and proficient at allocating risk to independent protective layers
  • Knowledgeable in application of ISA 84 / IEC 61511 Safety Instrumented Systems for Process Industry
  • Strong knowledge of automation/control systems including DCS, PLC, Safety Instrumented Systems, function block and ladder logic programming, industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Delta V implementation and SILworX software
  • Six Sigma certification
  • Previous experience using SAP and InTools.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task effectively
  • Self-started capable of managing assigned workload with minimal supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as interfaces will range from electricians to Site Management Leadership
