Temp to Hire Position
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, performs a broad range of technical engineering support functions; prepares engineering records, plans, drawing layout, system mapping, and computer-aided design and drafting; prepares engineering calculations; investigates and inspects power construction or alteration projects. Performs other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Distribution Estimator I is the entry class of the Distribution Estimator series. Progression to the next level will depend on vacant positions at the higher level.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The examples of essential functions listed below are representative but not necessarily exhaustive or descriptive and incumbent may be assigned other related functions not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment for the position.
- Assists in the design of overhead and underground distribution lines.
- Assists in the preparation of estimates for materials, equipment and labor cost using SAP.
- Assists engineering personnel in the gathering of field data and taking measurements; assists in the preparation of work approvals and customer service proposal for various engineering projects, including maintenance and capital projects as required.
- Records the construction of electrical lines, poles, apparatus and materials; prepares or revises drawings on construction projects; and updates poles and transformer database records.
- Prepares background drawings for engineers; and updates maps, system drawings, prepares graphs and charts and maintains other department records.
- Assists in the preparation of computer-aided and drafting data; develops and inputs basic information into computer system.
- Develops, maintains and plots computer-aided design and drafting data of circuit maps and drawings.
- Assists with preparation of new power construction jobs.
- Calculates and records distances, meets bounds and angles.
- Assists with street light mapping and tabulating.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepares changes in substation drawings or may prepare drawings of substations and related facilities.
- Assists with geographical information system updating.
- Assists with contract rental mapping.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
High school equivalency with supplemental college courses in engineering, drafting, computer-aided design and drafting, and/or advanced mathematics and;
Experience
Two years of appropriate computer-aided design and drafting experience.
Licensing
A valid driver license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
Knowledge
- Principles of engineering, electrical distribution systems, computer-aided design and drafting procedures and SAP; related materials and equipment and drafting/design procedure; advance mathematics.
- National Electrical Code; Cal OSHA title 8 and 24; State of California Electrical Safety Orders; General Orders 95, 128 and 165; building codes and standards; legal land descriptions; procedures and regulations and district's electrical system and service area.
Skills/Abilities
- Learn engineering procedures; apply electrical engineering concepts; read, analyze and interpret engineering plans, designs, specifications, circuit maps, street light maps, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence or procedure manual.
- Understand safety rules and regulations and work safely; understand safety rules and regulations and work safely; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; work with mathematical fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Prepare specifications and instructions regarding the power system; perform computer-aided design and drafting; draft sketches to scale and prepare detailed drawings or designs; estimate materials, equipment and labor costs for installations; operate personal computer and use software including SAP.
- Perform mathematical computations; inspect completed projects for conformance to design or drawing criteria; works courteously and cooperatively with employees, contractors, consumers, agency representatives and the general public.

- General office equipment, computer, digitizer, drafting table, drafting instruments, transit, survey instruments, measuring wheel, roll-a-tape, hammer, hatchet, wood stakes, manual, reference books, spray paint, markers and vehicle.
